A word for every day, a daily habit of reading the bible and spending time in God’s word (reading, studying and contemplating it’s meaning). When we read about Adam in the garden of Eden, the book of Genesis it tells us that God walked with Adam in the cool of the day. In other words, God spent time with Adam and Eve every day. It’s an important lesson to learn, that God’s desire is to spend time with us every day and the best way to do that is through the time we spend in His word (Bible). Why do we need a daily reading, why can’t we just have a worship time instead? We become poor disciples when we replace the reading of God’s word solely with other pursuits. It is better for us to have a worship time, and a prayer time as-well as reading time. If we don’t know God’s word then we are in danger of relying solely on emotions and physical sensations to direct us. There are plenty of men and women who have come to the strangest of conclusions, denying Christ is the One true Son of the living God and creating cults that have mislead many. The Bible warns about such people and instructs us to spend time studying the word of God in order to recognise truth from deception to avoid getting into spiritual difficulty. Jesus declared that you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free, and also He said, I am the way the truth and the life (John 14). So if we are not spending time in the truth of God’s word it is difficult to see how we can possibly be living the life (that of a disciple). Over many years I have developed the habit of reading the bible every day and have found that the more I read the more I discover. The God of Heaven has given us His word so that we might know Him better and understand His call and purpose for our lives. I have been greatly encourage by just how frequently God’s Spirit speaks to me through His word. In some of the most challenging times of my Christian life it has been a word in season as God has communicated through the words of scripture that I happened to be reading that day. A daily reading plan is of tremendous benefit not only in helping read and learn but also in those unanticipated moments when I have needed to hear and there in the middle of the planned verses I was reading God spoke to me. When Jesus taught the disciple to pray He referred to our daily bread in another place He said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. In other words Scripture is the daily bread for our inner man, our spirit. If we get out of the habit (or never develop the habit) of daily reading we end up spiritually weak. So let me encourage you to read the bible every day, to spend time with God as you read so that He can communicate with you through it. Make it a daily habit, over time you will find that it becomes a source of daily blessing.
